Japanese market, which leads the world in the field of the cellular phone and the audio visual for
cars, now looks forward to the arrival of the OLED display. The OLED display has a lot of merits such as a wide view-angle, thinness, lightness, high response, low electric consumption, high luminance and high contrast. At the moment, it is applied to the cellular phone and the car audio taking advantage of its strong points. In 2002 the market scale will run up to 10 billion. The OLED display is divided into two types; the passive type and the active type. Only the passive mono color type is applied practically now: the passive full color type and the active type are now under development. In 2003 SK Display, Tohoku Pioneer, SNMD and TMDT are supposed to bring the passive full color type and the active type into market. There are 10 companies that are developing the OLED panel in Japan. At the moment Tohoku Pioneer is taking the initiative followed by other companies. In such a situation, the TFT LCD display has improved its efficiency of the wide-view angle, thinness, high response, low electric consumption and high luminance. This is the result of the development competition among LCD manufactures. On the other hand, several problems have been found about OLED display. The lifetime of red color is short and the electric consumption increases when the luminance becomes higher. Some cellular phone makers dare to express their opinion that the OLED is needless. In fact, Tohoku Pioneer, SK Display and SNMD have postponed their plan to apply the OLED. As each manufacture has developed new materials and new production process, small-sized multi color OLED display is ready to come into the market. The development of large-sized OLED display for the TV monitor will take several years. It would be in 2005 when the large type is brought into the market. On the basis of the present situation of the OLED display, we investigated into the strategies of each manufacture in Japan and the trend of their development. |
